Tech defeats Huskies

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Men's Lacrosse Team traveled to New England to face the Northeastern Huskies.  The two programs have met numerous times in recent years with the road team winning each game.  The team played at The Derryfield School in New Hampshire due to field closures in Boston.

The Huskies got on the board first, but the Jackets answered back when Nick French fed Matt Seifert for the Jackets' first goal.  The Huskies added two more before the Jackets got back on the board when Ben Skopicki pushed the faceoff forward and found Asher Bernstein on the wing who fired home a shot.  After some back and forth play Will Ahmuty scored to tie the game with 0:14 on the clock in the first quarter.

The beginning of the second quarter was marked by both defenses clamping the offenses.  The Jacket defense led by George Corbin, Zach Harrison, and goalie Owen Armentrout turned the Huskies away time and again.

Northeastern scored to break the seal on the second quarter with 3:01 remaining.  The Jackets responded with back to back goals in the last minute of the second quarter.  Brayden Smith pushed from behind the goal and scored to tie the game.  Augie Werthman scored the final goal of the first half out of a timeout when he attacked his match up and got to the middle of the field before scoring.

Much like the second quarter, both teams took a while to get going in the third quarter.  Northeastern scored with 7:06 remaining.  DJ Louis fed Tate O'Leary on the crease with 3:40 remaining to put the Jackets back in front.  The Jackets scored again on their next possession as David Hull came streaking in from the box and slipped a shot past the goalie with 3:10 left in the quarter.  The Huskies got back within one on an extra man goal.  Will Ahmuty scooped up his own rebound and sent the ball past the goalie to put the Jackets back up by two at 8-6 to close the third quarter.

As was standard in this game, the first half of the fourth quarter was a defensive struggle as neither team could score.  Northeastern pulled within one with 7:03 remaining.  The Jackets got back up by two when Matt Seifert found Augie Werthman streaking in after the Jackets had forced a failed clear by the Huskies.  The 9-7 lead would hold until the Huskies pulled their goalie out late in the game in an attempt to double team the ball and Jacket keeper Owen Armentrout scored from 60 yards into the empty net to ice the game and give the Jackets the 10-7 win.

The Jackets have a quick turn around as they face the UConn Huskies on Sunday in Boston before heading home to Atlanta.
